Pregnancy after tubal ligation is rare. There are a number of women that want to get pregnant after tubal ligation and hope that the small percentage will apply to them. I am so scared because i might be pregnant. I guess my destiny was to have 4 no matter what?
Does any one here got pregnant after tubal ligation? I need some testimonials to feel much better because to tell you the truth number 4 its a really big number.
I have friends (actual people I know) who had accidental pregnancies after vascectomies, but had never before heard of it after tubal ligation. Therefore, I thought tubal ligation was a safer method.
A recent study has estimated that 143 women in 10,000 get pregnant after a tubal ligation, making the percentage about 1.43% which is better coverage than you’ll likely get from other forms of birth control because of the human error. Many of these pregnancies actually turn out to be ectopic pregnancies because of the damage done to the tube during a tubal ligation. Of course, your chances of becoming pregnant are limited, but every woman that has had a tubal ligation needs to know that there is a slight possibility that when your period is weeks late that you really could be pregnant. A tubal ligation really is one of the most effective forms of birth control, not because it’s 100%, but because it doesn’t take a pill each day at the same time to benefit from a consistent form of birth control. Many pregnancies happen on the pill because for it to be effective you have to take it just right, and there is no margin for human error. This means if you take your pill late or miss a pill, you could get pregnant. While there is a slight chance of pregnancy with a tubal ligation, it’s not because you’ve done anything wrong. There is no guarantee that you’ll experience success after a reversal, but the ability to reverse a tubal ligation is there and it will dramatically increase your chances of becoming pregnant again.
Because there is no guarantee that you’ll ever become pregnant again after a tubal ligation, especially if you do not have a reversal done, you should think very hard about having the procedure done at all. A tubal ligation is considered permanent birth control, but there is still a margin of error, and you could become pregnant any time after having the procedure done. If you have had a tubal ligation and you want to become pregnant, it may happen, but you’ll have better chances if you have a surgical procedure to reverse the tubal ligation.
A tubal ligation is one of the best forms of birth control, though it is not 100% guaranteed. Most women find that it’s more convenient than taking the pill, even if there is a small risk of pregnancy after tubal ligation.
The result is a functional tube. Many women say that they have had a tubal “ligation,” but they may have had other types of sterilization procedures such as an electrosurgical tubal coagulation procedure (”burning”) or laparoscopic placement of elastic bands or clips across the tube. Tubal ligation is often performed at the time of a cesarean section or immediately after delivery. The procedure, often called a Pomeroy tubal ligation, involves lifting the tube in the mid-portion, creating a loop. A slip-knot or noose-like knot is slipped over this loop of tube, and the knot is tied.
Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure designed to make a woman sterile by cutting, tying, clipping, cauterizing or blocking the fallopian tubes so sperm can’t reach an egg and fertilize it. The surgery is considered permanent (even though it’s occasionally reversible), so most states require a 30-day waiting period before you can schedule it. Tubal ligation used to be known as “getting your tubes tied” and it meant major abdominal surgery. These days it’s usually a much less invasive outpatient procedure.
This is cooperative Tubal Ligation Q&A that is constantly being improved by like you. Ten years after a tubal ligation, the rate of pregnancy actually goes up slightly. Many women wrongly assume that a tubal ligation is 100% certain method of preventing pregnancy, but it is not. Unlike a birth control pill, you can’t forget to have your tubal ligation done.
The U.S. Collaborative Review of Sterilization (CREST) found the failure rate for tubal ligation (all occlusion methods) to be 1.85% after 10 years. What is the failure rate for tubal ligations? A recent study (the Collaborative Review of Sterilization, or CREST, study) looked at 10,000 women who had undergone tubal ligation and found 143 failures (a failure rate of 1.4 percent). It can be higher when a tubal is done at the time of a C-section.
The failure rate also tends to increase the longer it has been since one had a tubal ligation. The birth of my second son is on video tape. Even though the camera is not on him performing the surgery, the camera is running in the room. You can hear the cautery tool in the background as he’s performing the tubal ligation. It’s in the operative report. I talked with my doctor last week, and he told me that a tubal ligation is NOT 100% effective bitrth control. I am a mother of 3 after my third child i decided to have a tubal ligation because i was sure i didn’t want anymore.
That was 9 years ago and now I’m 46 I had my second tubal in 1995 now its 9 years later and I have not had my period since october. I have not taken a test yet I keep thinking its menopause. but after reading all of these posts I’m starting to wonder now. I am 40 and had my tubal 11 years ago, I got prenant before christmas, I took my home test at 6 weeks and was positive, but have since lost the baby, but I thinkI would like to try again, am I nuts I don’t know but it becomes part of you and now I would like to be pregant, yes you can definitely get pregnant after a tubal, never say never.
I am 41, had tubes tied over 18 years ago. This is the first time i have been late for my period, almost 2 weeks, having signs of being pregnant, took 4 test, all negative. could it possibly be menopause? My last period went regular, 4 days, then two days after, i spotted for a week. what is going on? my breast are tender, i have gained like 7 lbs in the last week, no signs of period, no cramping, no nothing. I had my tubes tied in March of 2004. I always start my period on the day I am supposed to, but somehow this time around I missd it. Is it possible that I could be pregnant and my body just doesn’t know it yet? I have taken 2 pregnancy tests and the both came back negative.
I started my period last moth on christmas eve and I usually last five days and only lasted 3 and wasn’t very heavy. I haven’t started this moth at all,and I’m worried coould I be preganant? I took 3 pregnancy test all were negative. I heard it’s best to get a blood test to determine weither your pregnant.
I was just wondering when any of you that are pregnant after having your tubes tied took the home pregnancy test, did it come back positive? How long did you wait after your period was due to take the test? Thank you. I became pregnant almost 7 years after I had my tubes tied. It was ectopic and I didn’t know that I was even pregnant and my tube burst. The doctors don’t tell you how common it is to become pregnant after this procedure but I have found out it is more common than I ever thought. My tubes were just tied 20 months ago and i think i maybe pregnant now or can i become pregnant; need to know i already have triplets an 1 little lady. pls. rspd.
Hello ok for all you ladies that actually got pregnant after a tubal, what were your symptoms like? I had mine tied almost 3 yrs ago at age 23. I had a tubal in Dec.1993 and am now 2 month late for my period and showing signs of pregnancy. This morning I used a home pregnancy kit and it came with a positive test result. I just had a tubal done, and am regretting it, what are the chances it didn’t work.
You just never know.I have had 26 years free of birth control, if I am pregnant, it will truely be a MIRACLE. My husband and I would be happy about it. My last period was in October and I have never missed a period except when I was pregnant with my son. It started out clumpy brown, then i was bleeding, the next couple of days, very light, and half normal. I still feel like i’m pregnant, sore breast, and i am still gaining weight with no appetite? Its like i’m filling up with fluid! also no sexual desire. My husband and I waited 17 years to start a family (by choice) and I got pregnant right away and had a virtually symptom free pregnancy. 10 days post-delivery I was in ICU with CHF brought on by peripartum cardiomyopathy.
In 1972 while taking the pill I got pregnant and gave birth to my 2nd child. In 1970 while using the rhythm method of birth control I got pregnant and gave birth to my first child.
Have not gotten pregnant again; have not used any birth control or had the tubes re-done. I just recently got married and my husband and I would love to get pregnant. The chances of my being pregnant are pretty much 0. but that possibility still lingers in my mind and scares the bejeezus out of me.
Hullo ladies, I’m afraid I have bad news for you.Tubal ligation is intended to be a permanent procedure, so even after surgery to reverse the procedure, the pregnancy rates are still quite low. If indeed you choose to go through with the ligation, you should rest just as easily as if you were taking the pill or Depo.
My new husband (after 1 year of marriage) and I are hoping that we find favor with God since we can’t afford the tubal reversal. I had a tubal almost 13years ago, and I don’t want to have any surgery, so I guess my question is how likely is it the I can get pregnanct and carry the baby full term. Heh, I had a tubal last summer (also after only one kid) and I have also just missed a period.
Electrosurgical procedures depend on burning a sufficient length of the fallopian tube as well as complete scarring as the tubal damage heals. If you resume sexual activity too early after this type of surgery, the tube may not yet have scarred shut. Tubal sterilization procedures can fail - either very soon after the treatment or as long as 10 years afterward.
During the healing process, the two tubal ends are still held together until the suture (stitch) dissolves, which occurs in two to six weeks, depending on the type of suture chosen.
I delivered at around 8AM and wasn’t allowed to eat or drink anything all day and went in for my tubal around 6 that evening. You do have to fill out a consent form weeks in advance to have a tubal because it’s considered irreversible. I’ve heard that if you have them just tied, that they can sometimes undo themselves. I would think if you had them snipped and burnt, then there wasn’t anyway to conceive again. I guess if it’s meant to be, then it’s meant to be. I, however, just had my tubal done on Sunday, and if I end up pregnant, I’ll be a rich mommy, cause mine were tied, snipped, and burnt and there will be no more babies coming out of this factory ever again. You can get pregnant with the pill, and apparently, you still have a risk getting pregnant after a tubal.
Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the pill around 99% effective? So, pretty much the same as a tubal.
Steff - Sorry to scare you! I’ve scared a whole lot of women since I first found out I was pregnant. Anyway, yes, I am sure that he burned my tubes at the end. Only like 99.99%. When you sign the consent forms to have it done, it tells you this in the forms so you cannot sue the doctor if you get pregnant again after the procedure.
The percentage of women that get pregnant after 10 years rises to 1.85%. This is an average, and you’ll find that most women do not get pregnant even after 10, 20, or even 30 years.
